Did you know that Roman baths were sometimes a form of entertainment?
People went to have baths mostly to relax and not just to get clean. Baths were a good place to meet people and do business.Baths usually started when you warmed up and did some exercise, then you swam in the pool and then went into a series of heated rooms. You would get very hot and you would sweat out the dirt. You could talk to your friends and then you could have a massage and would usually be rubbed down with perfumed oil. After this you or a slave would scrape off the sweat, oil and dirt with a metal know as a strigil and then you would finally get into the freezing cold pool and you would have finished your bath.
Roman men and women never bathed together even if they were married. Women usually bathed in the mornings when men were at work and men usually bathed in the afternoons. Also visitors to the baths could take part in sports, do excersise, have a massage or get a haircut.
