Did you know many Ancient Roman houses were made out of wood and because of this many Roman leaders banned cooking in houses?
In Ancient Roman times no everyone had proper ovens or stoves to cook with. People who did not have proper cooking devices bought food from people on the streets and cooked it in public ovens.People usually bought salt, sausages, porridge and bread from street vendors. Wealthy people who were better off usually owned a proper kitchen and then they would make slaves cook their meals for them.
Out of the many meals that were eaten by the Romans the main meal was the cena which was usually eaten in the evening. Foods like bread and gruel were two basic foods which were made from wheat and usually eaten often during the day.Gruel was made from flour which was boiled in water.
The evening meal for a rich family would be held in the triclinium which was a room with three couches arranged like a horse shoe along the walls. Men would usually eat whilst they were lying down. However if women and children were present then they would eat at a table in the middle of the room. At the evening meal there would usually be meat which was served. This meat would usually be young goat or chicken.
